Wood Carports

Trying to finalize your carport buying decision?  Do you think that the days of wood carports are numbered in this age of steel and iron?  Then read on and see why wooden carports are still a viable consideration when it comes to choosing how to build your first or next carport.

Wood Vs. Metal

Everywhere you look it seems that if there’s a carport to be found it’s going to be made of metal.  But that doesn’t mean that metal is going to be your only option.  Wood has been used for many, many years for all kinds of buildings and it still is.  While wood may require more maintenance than metal, you should have a much nicer and prettier carport for all of your effort.  Plus, wood is much easier for the average handy-person to work with.

If you were so inclined, you could even build a carport that was made of both.  You could use metal for the posts, wood for the frame work and decorative touches, and then metal for the roof.  Or any combination.  The sky really is the limit, here.

Desirability

On the whole, wood is much nicer looking than metal.  Whereas metal can appear cold and industrial, a nice wood carport is going to look homey and inviting.  Unless you live in an office building, you will have a much easier time matching your carport to your home if you build it out of wood.  You can match the style of your house or compliment it.  Wood can be painted, stained, or varnished.  In fact, since you’ll have to keep refinishing every few years, you could even completely change its appearance every time if you wanted to.

Ease of Building Without a Kit

If you’re the type of person who wants to build from scratch, then going with a wood carport really is the best option.  Chances are, you already have the wood working tools you need, but if not, then buying them is usually far cheaper than buying tools used for metal.  Plus, wood is much easier to work with, especially for the weekend builder.

Once you’ve got your plans drawn up, it’s only going to be a matter of making a trip to the lumber yard for all of your supplies.  After one or two weekends of hard work, you’ll have a carport that you build, literally, from the ground up.  And if you forego any kits or pre-made plans, then you can have the added satisfaction of having a unique wood carport that’s all your own.

Now, while wood is nice for many reasons, you may prefer going with a metal carport, and that’s completely fine, too.  Just don’t count wood out of the mix until you’ve done your research.
